Battery vs Alternator: Which One Failed?

By Dominic Timperio, Founder · Dash Auto Services

If your car cranks slow, dies after a jump, or has dim lights, it could be either the battery or the alternator. Here's the 30-second test to tell which.

The fastest way to tell whether you have a bad battery or a bad alternator is the jump-start test. Jump the car. If it starts and keeps running after you disconnect the cables, the alternator is fine and the battery is the problem. If it starts but dies within a few minutes (or as soon as you disconnect the jumper cables), the alternator isn't charging and the battery just ran out of stored power. If it won't even crank with a good jump from a known-good vehicle, you're likely looking at a starter — not the battery or alternator.

Here's why that test works. The battery's job is to start the car. Once the engine is running, the alternator takes over — it powers everything (lights, radio, AC, fuel pump, computer) and recharges the battery. If the alternator dies, the car will run for a few minutes on whatever charge is left in the battery, then everything shuts off and the engine stalls. If the battery dies but the alternator is healthy, a jump gives you enough power to start, and from there the alternator keeps the car running indefinitely.

Other clues that point to the alternator: the battery warning light stays on while driving, headlights dim noticeably at idle and brighten when you rev the engine, you smell hot wiring or burning rubber (a failing alternator bearing or slipping belt), the dashboard flickers, or you've already replaced the battery in the last year and it's failing again. A healthy alternator should put out 13.8–14.4 volts at idle with the engine running. Anything under 13.0 volts means it isn't charging.

Clues that point to the battery: the car has been sitting for a few days and won't start, you hear rapid clicking when you turn the key, the battery is more than 2–3 years old (in Fort Myers — Florida heat shortens battery life dramatically), or a load test at an auto parts store fails. If the battery sits at 12.6+ volts at rest and the car still won't start reliably, the battery is fine and you need to look elsewhere.

There's a third possibility people forget: a bad ground or corroded battery terminals. Even a perfectly good battery can't deliver power if there's heavy corrosion on the terminals or a loose ground strap. Before condemning the battery or alternator, clean the terminals with a wire brush and check that the negative cable is bolted tightly to the engine or chassis.

If you're not sure after the jump-start test, Dash will diagnose it at your home in Fort Myers — we test the battery under load and the alternator's output voltage, and tell you exactly which part needs replacing before charging you to swap one. Replacing the wrong part is the most expensive mistake people make on no-start problems.

    Frequently asked

Can a bad alternator drain a good battery?

Yes. A failing alternator either fails to charge the battery (so it slowly runs flat) or, in some cases, allows current to drain backward into it when the car is off. If your battery keeps dying and it's less than 2 years old, suspect the alternator.

How long will a car run on just the battery if the alternator dies?

Usually 20–60 minutes during the day, less at night with headlights on. Once battery voltage drops below ~10.5 volts, the engine computer loses power and the car stalls. Pull over as soon as you see the battery warning light come on.

How much does it cost to replace an alternator in Fort Myers?

Mobile alternator replacement in Fort Myers typically runs $400–$750 installed, depending on the vehicle. Dash diagnoses on-site first so you only pay to replace the part that actually failed.

Will AutoZone test my alternator for free?

Yes — AutoZone, Advance Auto, and O'Reilly all test batteries and alternators for free. But if your car won't start, you can't drive there. Dash brings the same test to your driveway and can replace the part on the spot.
