Engine Performance Problems in Florida Heat
Florida heat causes rough idle, hesitation, stalling, and poor gas mileage by stressing coils, sensors, fuel pumps, and cooling systems. Here's what actually fails and why.
Heat is the biggest single stressor on engine performance in Southwest Florida. Sustained 90°F+ ambient temperatures push under-hood temps well past what components are comfortable with, and the parts that fail first are predictable: ignition coils, crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, mass airflow sensors, fuel pumps, and anything in the cooling system.
Heat-related ignition coil failure is the classic Fort Myers drivability complaint. The car runs fine cold, then starts misfiring or stumbling after 20 minutes of driving in traffic. Coil windings break down as they heat up, so the fault is intermittent and disappears once the car cools — which is exactly why it's so often misdiagnosed. The fix is straightforward once you catch it with live misfire data while the engine is hot.
Crank and cam position sensors do the same thing in reverse: they cause hot-restart no-starts. You drive to the store, shut the car off, come back ten minutes later, and it cranks but won't fire. Twenty minutes later it starts fine. That's a heat-soaked sensor dropping signal, and it's one of the most common summer no-start calls we take.
Fuel pumps lose output as they heat up too, especially in cars that are habitually run at a quarter tank — fuel cools the pump, so a low tank means a hotter pump. Symptoms are hesitation under acceleration, loss of power climbing an overpass, and eventually a stall.
Cooling system problems compound everything. A weak radiator fan, an old thermostat, or coolant that hasn't been changed lets engine temps creep up, and modern engine computers pull timing when temps run high — which you feel as sluggishness and worse fuel economy. If your gas mileage dropped this summer without any other symptom, the cooling system is a reasonable first place to look.
Prevention is simple and cheap here: keep coolant fresh and at the correct concentration, replace the air filter more often than the manual says (Florida dust and pollen load it fast), don't habitually run below a quarter tank, and get intermittent hot-only symptoms diagnosed while they're still intermittent. A misfire that only appears when hot is a $200 coil today and a fouled catalytic converter later.
