What Happens During an Auto Engine Diagnostic?

By Dominic Timperio, Founder · Dash Auto Services

An engine diagnostic is a scan plus real testing: codes, live data, freeze frame, then targeted checks to confirm the fault. Here's exactly what a mobile diagnostic includes.

An auto engine diagnostic is not just reading a code. Reading the code is the first five minutes. The diagnostic is everything after that: interpreting live sensor data, reviewing freeze-frame conditions from when the fault set, and running targeted tests to confirm which component or circuit is actually at fault before anything gets replaced.

Here's the sequence we follow on a mobile engine diagnostic in Fort Myers. First, a full scan of every module — not just the engine computer — for stored, pending, and permanent codes. Pending codes are valuable because they catch problems that haven't yet turned the check engine light on. Second, freeze-frame review: the computer records engine temperature, RPM, load, and fuel trim at the moment the fault set, which tells us whether the problem happens cold, hot, at idle, or under load.

Third, live data. Fuel trims, misfire counters per cylinder, O2 sensor switching, MAF readings against expected values for your engine's displacement, and coolant and intake temps. This is where most misdiagnoses get caught. A P0171 lean code, for example, is not a 'bad O2 sensor' — it's the computer reporting that it's adding fuel to compensate for something, and that something is usually a vacuum leak, a dirty MAF, or low fuel pressure.

Fourth, physical testing to confirm. Smoke testing for vacuum leaks, fuel pressure testing, coil and plug swaps between cylinders to see if a misfire follows the part, voltage drop tests on suspect circuits. This step is the difference between a real diagnosis and an educated guess.

Finally, we explain what we found in plain language, quote the repair, and in most cases fix it during the same visit — spark plugs, coils, sensors, vacuum lines, throttle body cleaning, and filters are all on the truck. A typical mobile engine diagnostic takes 45–90 minutes depending on how intermittent the fault is.

The free code scan at a parts store isn't the same thing. It tells you which code is stored, which is the starting point, not the answer. That's genuinely useful information, but acting on it alone is how people end up replacing three parts to fix one problem.

    Frequently asked

How long does an engine diagnostic take?

Typically 45–90 minutes on-site. Hard-fault problems that are present the whole time go faster; intermittent faults that only appear when the engine is hot can take longer.

Is a free parts-store scan good enough?

It tells you the stored code, which is a starting point — not a diagnosis. A code points to a circuit or symptom, not the failed part. Confirming testing is what prevents replacing parts that were never bad.

Do you charge for the diagnostic?

There's a flat diagnostic fee quoted before we dispatch, and it's applied to the repair if you have us do the work. No open-ended hourly billing.
