How to Tell If It's Your Starter or Alternator
If a jump start works and the car keeps running — battery. If it dies right after the jump — alternator. If it won't crank at all — starter. Here's the full diagnostic.
Starter and alternator failures get confused constantly because the symptoms overlap — the car won't start, the battery seems dead, and the dash lights act weird. But these are completely different parts doing completely different jobs. The starter cranks the engine over when you turn the key. The alternator charges the battery and powers everything electrical once the engine is running. Replacing the wrong one is a $400–$700 mistake.
The cleanest test is the jump start test. Jump the car from a known-good battery or jump pack. If it cranks and starts immediately, then keeps running smoothly after you disconnect the jump cables, your battery was just discharged — most often from leaving lights on or from the battery itself being worn out. If it starts but then dies within 30 seconds to 2 minutes after the cables come off, your alternator is dead. The engine ran on residual battery power until that ran out. If it won't crank at all even with a strong jump, your starter is the problem.
There are secondary clues too. A failing alternator often causes dim or flickering headlights at idle, the battery light on the dash, electrical accessories (radio, power windows) acting strange while driving, or a whining/grinding noise from the front of the engine. A failing starter usually shows up as a loud single click, a grinding noise when you turn the key (worn starter gear), or starting that gets slower and slower over weeks until one day it just clicks.
Voltage testing confirms it definitively. With the engine off, a healthy battery reads 12.4–12.7 volts. With the engine running, a healthy alternator should push that up to 13.8–14.4 volts at the battery terminals. If the voltage stays at 12.4 or drops while running, the alternator isn't charging.
