Electric Vehicle Maintenance in Florida: What EVs Still Need

Electric vehicles eliminate oil changes, spark plugs, timing belts, exhaust systems, and transmission fluid — but they don't eliminate maintenance. EV owners in Fort Myers still need tires, brakes, cabin filters, coolant for the battery thermal system, suspension work, and yes, a 12-volt battery. In fact, the single most common EV service call we get is a dead 12V battery, which will leave a Tesla just as stranded as it would a Camry.

The 12-volt battery is the surprise for most new EV owners. Even though the car is powered by a large high-voltage pack, nearly every EV still uses a conventional 12V battery to run the computers, unlock the doors, and 'wake up' the main system. In Florida heat those 12V batteries last 2–4 years just like any other, and when one fails the car often can't be opened or started at all. Tires wear faster on EVs. Instant torque plus 500–1,000 lbs of extra battery weight means EV tires typically last 20–30% fewer miles than the same tire on a gas car. Rotate every 5,000–7,500 miles and check pressure monthly — Florida temperature swings move pressure significantly, and low pressure hits EV range harder than gas mileage.

Brakes wear slower but corrode faster. Regenerative braking means most EV drivers barely use the friction brakes, so pads can last 70,000–100,000 miles. The catch in Florida: rotors that rarely get used still rust from humidity and salt air, and calipers seize from lack of movement. EV brakes need an annual inspection and caliper service far more than they need pads.

Battery thermal management is where Florida heat matters most. High ambient temperatures accelerate high-voltage battery degradation, especially when combined with frequent DC fast charging and parking in full sun. The coolant loop that keeps the pack in range needs its fluid checked and replaced per the manufacturer schedule (often 4–8 years). Practical habits that preserve range: park in shade or a garage, use Level 2 home charging instead of DC fast charging for daily use, and keep the state of charge between 20% and 80% except before long trips.

Also on the list: cabin air filter yearly (Florida humidity grows mold in them), wiper blades yearly, suspension inspection — EVs are heavy and bushings and struts wear sooner — and alignment after pothole season.
