Florida Car Maintenance Checklist (Monthly, Seasonal & Yearly)

A car maintenance checklist keeps small problems from becoming expensive ones — but the standard checklist in your owner's manual was written for average U.S. conditions, not Southwest Florida. Here, sustained 90°F heat, 70%+ humidity, salt air off the Gulf, and daily summer downpours push batteries, coolant, brakes, wipers, and A/C systems far harder than they'd work in Ohio. This is the checklist we use with Fort Myers, Cape Coral, and Estero customers.

MONTHLY (5 minutes in your driveway): check tire pressure when tires are cold — Florida heat swings pressure 3–5 PSI between morning and afternoon; look at tread depth with a quarter; check engine oil level on level ground; top off windshield washer fluid (you'll use a lot of it during love bug season); test all exterior lights; and listen for new noises when braking or turning. Anything new or different is worth a look before it strands you.

EVERY 3 MONTHS / 3,000–5,000 MILES: oil and filter change (conventional 3,000–4,000 miles, full synthetic 5,000–7,500), tire rotation, brake inspection, and a visual check of belts and hoses. Florida heat degrades rubber faster than anywhere else — cracked serpentine belts and swollen coolant hoses are one of the most common causes of roadside breakdowns we're called out for in Lee County.

EVERY 6 MONTHS: battery load test (not just a voltage check), A/C performance check, cabin air filter, engine air filter, and coolant strength test. Batteries in Fort Myers last only 2.5–3.5 years, so testing twice a year is the single highest-value item on this list. A/C should be blowing 38–45°F at the center vent — anything warmer means the system is losing refrigerant.

YEARLY: brake fluid moisture test (humidity here saturates brake fluid faster — over 3% water content means it needs flushing), wiper blade replacement, undercarriage rinse if you drive near the beach, full suspension inspection, transmission fluid check, and an alignment check if you've hit the potholes that appear after rainy season.

SEASONAL — BEFORE SUMMER (April/May): A/C service, coolant flush if due, battery test, tire condition. Before hurricane season, make sure you can rely on the car for an evacuation. FOR SNOWBIRDS (before storage and after return): fuel stabilizer, battery tender or disconnect, tire over-inflation to prevent flat-spotting, and a full inspection when you return — cars that sit for 6 months in Florida heat come back with dry-rotted belts, dead batteries, and rodent damage more often than people expect.
